A blaze ripped through parts of Die Anker old age home earlier in the day, killing one person.

Centre manager Dess Rhoode told Jacaranda FM News that the facility housed around 40 people.

"I was called that there was smoke coming out of one of the rooms. We tried to open the room, but we couldn't, so we contacted the emergency services, and they were very prompt.

"There was one lady inside the room. We tried to open, but we could not get there, and eventually, when they opened the room, she was overcome by smoke. Unfortunately, she passed away.

"In the facility we have 40 residents, who are all safe. None of them had any injuries or burns. Some of them had to be treated for smoke inhalation. Only one has been hospitalised.

"We have taken them to a place of safety where we are going to call their families to come and pick them up, to stay with them for about a week until everything is sorted this side".

Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
