Richard Maponya to receive special official funeral

The late businessman and philanthropist, Richard Maponya is set to receive a special official funeral, Category 2, the Presidency announced on Thursday.

Maponya passed away on Monday 6 at the age of 99 after fighting a short illness.

Maponya was a founding member of the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce (NAFCOC) and chairman of the African Chamber of Commerce.
President Cyril Ramaphosa spokesperson, Khusela Diko says the President has directed that the national flag fly at half-mast from Friday until the evening of the burial, which is set to take place on Tuesday 14 January.
“While expressing condolences to the Maponya family and to friends and colleagues, President Ramaphosa said the Maponya name is a veritable institution in our public life, standing for excellence and inspiring generations of South Africans,” said Diko.
“He actively sought to capacitate nascent black businesses and variously lent his support to entrepreneurship ventures, particularly in Soweto.”
