Riverlea High fire repairs will cost over R2m

The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that the reconstruction of Riverlea Secondary School, where a devastating fire destroyed 11 classrooms last month, will cost approximately R2.5 million.

The rebuild is expected to be completed during the 2025/26 financial year.

Thus far, no physical repairs have begun, and no funds have been disbursed for the project.

“The department has implemented fire safety measures at the school. Fire blankets were delivered on 13 May 2025, and learners and staff have received basic firefighting training,” said provincial spokesperson Steve Mabona on Monday.

The fire, which started in an unused classroom, quickly engulfed an entire classroom block. Four classrooms used by Grade 8 pupils and the boys’ toilet block were damaged.

Officials revealed that the school lacks a fire alarm system due to financial limitations, and the last fire safety inspection was not recorded before the incident.

However, plans are underway to partner with the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services in the second quarter of the 2025/26 financial year to conduct fire preparedness training for the School Safety Committee.

“Firefighting equipment was last serviced in May 2024 and is scheduled for its next service at the end of May 2025. Maintenance remains a priority item at the school,” Mabona added.

Meanwhile, police have questioned three boys in connection with the blaze at the school as investigations continue.
