Robinson landfill site fire extinguished

Pikitup's spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi confirmed on Saturday that the Robinson Deep landfill site near Turffontein, Johannesburg has been fully extinguished.

This after the fire at Johannesburg's largest refuse dump broke out in the early hours of Tuesday.
The waste management entity and the Johannesburg emergency services worked hand in hand to put out the fire.
Use of heavy machinery, including two excavators, eight tipper trucks, and one articulated dumper truck, were used to cover the fire with soil.
Mkhwanazi says following days of exhausting efforts and hampered by windy conditions, the fire at the landfill site had been extinguished on Saturday morning.
"Pikitup is happy to announce that the fire that had raged for the three days at the Robinson landfill site has been extinguished.
We would like to thank all employees who put all efforts to ensure that the Joburg sky is smoke free and ensured that all the residents residing close to the landfill site are breathing clean air again."
Mkhwanazi has urged residents to refrain from starting open fires at the perimeter walls of landfill site to avoid future recurrences of open fires at landfill sites.
