SA Navy hands over Kommetjie drill copy to Hawks

The South African Navy has handed a copy of the Board of Inquiry into the incident that killed three SANDF submariners in Kommetjie, in the Western Cape, to the Hawks.

The submariners died during a vertical transfer exercise between the SAS MANTHATISI submarine and the SA Air Force Maritime Lynx helicopter in September 2023.
The SA Navy Board of Inquiry handed over a copy on Tuesday in Pretoria.
"The engagements were meant to assist the Hawks with their ongoing investigations into the tragic incident wherein the SA Navy lost three of its submariners," the SA Navy said in a statement.
"This meeting and engagement with the Hawks underscores the Navy's commitment to transparency, cooperation and accountability, as the Chief of the SA Navy has always maintained that the organisation will, within the confines of the laws and regulations, communicate the outcomes of the Board whenever the need arises."
The navy officers who died during a naval exercise were Lt. Commander Gillian Hector, Master Warrant Officer William Mathipa, and Warrant Officer Lucas Mojela.
The trio were among seven members recovered from the waters during the incident.
