Saccawu strike at Massmart to continue, talks on Monday

Striking members of the South African
Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) held protests across
the country on Friday - with the labour action now entering its second week.

“We are having a march today and workers attended in numbers who are SACCAWU members, some have stayed on the picket line so that they can still send a message to society so that (society) can support their action,” says Saccawu deputy president Angie Phetlhe.
Employees of MassMart, which owns local brands including Makro and Game, have complained that working conditions have changed.
Phetlhe says there has also been reduced hours which means reduced pay without consultation.
“The main demand is that the employer has undergone a unilateral downward variation of the conditions of employees, the example here is the change of 195 hours to 120 and the 45 hours to 40 hours, without consulting anyone, they just did it.”
Saccawu’s demands include R500 increase for all workers and better working conditions.
Phetlhe adds that talks will commence on Monday.
“We believe that the employer and Saccawu at some stage may go back to the table and continue on with the discussions and find a very positive solution that will make everyone happy, which will be on Monday.”
