SAHRC raises alarm over fatal shooting at WSU

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has expressed deep concern following a shooting incident at Walter Sisulu University’s Mthatha campus on Tuesday.

Preliminary reports suggest that one person has died, and two others were injured after an altercation allegedly involving campus security personnel.
In a statement, the Commission extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured students a full and swift recovery.
“This deeply troubling incident underscores a recurring pattern of violence at institutions of higher learning,” said the SAHRC, referencing a similar confrontation in May 2024 that also resulted in student injuries.
The Commission is finalising a report from a formal inquiry launched after the 2024 incident, which examined the use of force by law enforcement and private security during student protests.
The SAHRC reaffirmed the constitutional right to peaceful protest and called for accountability and restraint in the use of force on campuses.
"Violence has no place in spaces meant for education and development," the statement added.
The Commission urged that any response to student protests be lawful, proportionate, and respectful of constitutional protections.
