SALGA in Limpopo urges less dependence on water authorities
Updated | By Lesetja Makhura
The chairperson of the South African Local Government Association in Limpopo, John Mpe, wants municipalities to be given more responsibilities when it comes to water supply.

Mpe, who also serves as mayor of Polokwane, wants municipalities in Limpopo to lessen their dependence on authorities like Lepelle Northern Water and Magalies Water.
He made the call during the SALGA Provincial Executive Committee lekgotla in Polokwane on Friday.
At the same time, Mpe urged the government to improve water infrastructure networks.
He also welcomed the proposal to establish an independent economic water regulator to monitor water pricing.
"We have objected as SALGA to many increases by utilities because, as it is now, it's like we are the ones making water more expensive, whereas we know the utilities are increasing with double digits every year," said Mpe.
The lekgotla was attended by the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, David Mahlobo, and the Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientso Ramokgopa.
Mpe emphasised the importance of municipalities acting as electricity authorities, as it assists with revenue collection.
"Electricity is a key revenue generator, and most of our municipalities depend on it."
