Workers affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) in Johannesburg are expected meet on Friday following their protest on Thursday.

Thousands of workers blocked parts of the M1 and M2 highways in Johannesburg as they voiced their anger over a wage dispute.

Speaking to SABC news, Samwu's deputy regional chairperson Lebogang Ndawo said workers have since returned to their posts.
"The City has actually returned money to the National Treasury so they cannot say they do not have money. One of the biggest problems that we are having is that there is preference to contractors and that takes a lot from the city's pocket.
"Workers went back to work yesterday, it’s just that if we had management and leadership in the City of Johannesburg, we could have avoided the protest.
"There are meetings that are taking place now with the intervention of the province, we hope the province will realise that workers cannot continue to subsidise the city. They cannot continue to offer a service of category 10 while they get paid for category 8".
