SANDF investigates fake video of soldiers’ protest
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has issued a strong warning to both its members and the public over a fake video circulating on TikTok and other social media platforms, which falsely claims to feature a senior military commander calling for an illegal strike.

In a statement released by the Department of Defence, the SANDF labelled the video as “fake, misleading, and maliciously fabricated,” adding that the man seen in the footage is not a recognised commander within the ranks of the defence force.
"This video is a deliberate attempt to manipulate public perception, sow discord, and undermine the cohesion and operational discipline of the SANDF," the department said.
The fake clip has sparked concern over its potential to erode public trust in the military and incite unrest among uniformed personnel.
The SANDF described the disinformation as a threat to national security and warned that any participation or support of such actions would carry serious consequences.
"Members of the SANDF are strongly cautioned not to associate with, support, or entertain any such unlawful activities, they are reminded of their constitutional obligation to remain apolitical, loyal, and disciplined in service of the Republic of South Africa."
The defence force has launched an internal investigation to track down the origins of the video.
It confirmed that anyone found responsible — either within or outside the SANDF — will face prosecution under both military and civilian law.
The public has also been urged not to share or disseminate the clip further.
