SAPS condemns attack on Anti-Gang Unit in Westbury
Updated | By Selaki Ledwaba
The South African Police Service has warned that any attack on its anti-gang units while they perform their duties would be to the detriment of the very communities they are meant to protect.

The Anti-Gang Unit is a unit in SAPS responsible for combating gangs and crime, including dealing and trafficking of drugs as well as gang-related shootings and murders.
Community members in Westbury, west of Johannesburg, attacked members of the unit on Tuesday, after its officials arrested a man found in possession of drugs.
Residents pelted the officers with rocks and bottles.
“Members tactically withdrew from the operation by ensuring the safety of the very community that was attacking them,” said national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
“The community of Westbury have from time to time been complaining about the high levels of crime, including drug dealing in the area. We have deployed the anti-gang unit to deal decisively with this type of crime, but it seems as though when police take charge and enforce the law, communities turn on them and attack them.“
No police officer was injured.
Meanwhile, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union condemned the attacks on officers
“We also note with concern the allegations made on social media accusing police of complicity with gangsterism and corruption. While such claims must be investigated, they must not be used to justify attacks on officers,” said the union’s spokesperson, Richard Mamabolo.
