The South African Police Service says it is investigating the possibility that a Gauteng teenager was the victim of a hate crime or muthi-related killing.

Fourteen-year-old Likhona Fose’s lifeless body was discovered by a passerby in the veld in Durban Deep on the West Rand.

Fose’s genitals had been removed.

During her visit to the family of the slain teenager, Deputy Police Minister Polly Boshielo confirmed that the occult unit has been roped in after the teenager was found with her private parts mutilated.

“We are roping the occult unit because we suspect that there may be cult related. As I have said, we are going to use all the resources to investigate this matter. The occult unit is responsible for investigating all cases where body parts are removed from victims for various reasons, including hate crimes or muthi crimes.”

According to reports, Fose’s family said they had often referred to her as a tomboy.

Without disclosing too much, the deputy minister added that the unit would investigate whether the murder was a hate crime motivated by the teen’s sexuality.

“There are two possibilities here; it could be Likhona was targeted for her sexuality, making it a hate crime, or her body parts were mutilated for muthi purposes,” Boshielo explained.

They will also probe whether the murder is muthi-related.

This comes as sangoma Sebokoana Khounyana appeared in the Vanderbijl Park Magistrates Court, alongside the mother of the missing two-year-old Kutlwano Shalaba, after pointing police to a shallow grave with the body of a child believed to be Shalaba.

No one has been arrested for Fose’s murder as investigations continue.
