People took to the streets in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Durban and Mbombela calling for President Jacob Zuma to resign.

Police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe said it is pleasing to note that no major incidents of violence or damage to property were reported.

"Law enforcement agencies, led by the South African Police Service (SAPS), were deployed to ensure that public order was maintained in yesterday's protest marches or demonstrations," said Mathe.

Mathe said the people of South Africa conducted themselves in a proper and orderly manner.

"In the main, at least 70 000 people of our country responded to our call to ensure that there are peaceful protests," said Mathe.

Mathe said they would like to thank citizens for their cooperation in making their job and responsibility as law enforcement officers manageable.

"We would like to express our gratitude to all law enforcement agencies, in particular the members of SAPS, for their contribution to ensuring successful operations towards the realisation of our mandate as provided in Section 205 of the Constitution, which provides for, amongst others, to prevent combat, maintain public order and maintain the rule of law."
