SASSA, Post Office to meet amid grant payment concerns

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) says it is set to meet with the South African Post Office on Monday afternoon.

The meeting follows confirmation by Communications Minister Mondli Gungubele on Sunday that the South African Post Office has been place under provisional liquidation.
The state-owned entity was placed under provisional liquidation after a successful court application by one of its creditors.
The Post Office’ debts stand at some R4 billion.
In a statement on Sunday, Gungubele said SAPO remains a crucial government service which caters to millions of citizens and cannot afford to cease its operations.
“The department and SAPO must work diligently to ensure that the Post Office transforms into an independent and profitable business entity for the benefit of the country's citizens.”
Sassa spokesperson Paseka Lestatsi says there are contingency plans with the Post Office which they are trying to put in place to ensure that beneficiaries do get what is due to them.
“Currently we have not yet put it into practice but there is an engagement between us and the Post Office. The COO of SASSA and the Post Office are supposed to meet this afternoon to iron out some of the hiccups.
“As the organisation we are convinced that whatever that we try to work between us and the Post Office, we will make sure that the beneficiaries do get what is due to them without any distress.”
