SASSA warns against fake news of double grant payments

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has warned of disinformation targeting its services and beneficiaries, particularly on social media platforms.

The agency says it is alarmed by the increasing circulation of false claims, including reports that suggest SASSA will issue double grant payments in June, and that "new rules" will affect pensioners from 10 June.

SASSA spokesperson Andile Tshona appealed to SASSA beneficiaries not to expect double payments in June.

"In line with the Ministry of Finance's Policy Statement in March, grant increases were announced and came into effect in April, and there will be another increase again in October. Any other increase not announced by credible and relevant authorities should be treated as lies."

Tshona added that the fake reports are misleading and dangerous.

"They can cause unnecessary anxiety and false hope among millions of vulnerable South Africans who rely on social grants for survival. There are people hiding behind anonymity who are deliberately spreading misinformation to sow panic and confusion.”

SASSA also addressed claims that it had introduced new rules affecting pensioners starting 10 June.

The agency clarified that the only recent change is a verification process for targeted beneficiaries as part of the May 2025 payment cycle.

This process affects individuals who use alternative forms of identification, or those flagged through means tests showing undeclared income.

"The verification is limited and does not affect the majority of our beneficiaries. We urge the public to verify information via our official social media pages or visit SASSA offices directly," said Tshona.
