The 60-year-old man was gunned down on Thursday morning shortly after dropping off school children in the area.

Gauteng Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said preliminary investigation indicates that the suspects were on foot.

"It is reported that the victim had dropped off the kids at school when he was shot while inside his vehicle at the stop sign."

Speaking to the SABC, the victim’s relative who goes by the name ‘Lucia’ said she was alerted to the shooting when her husband received a phone call at around 07:30 am.

“Five minutes after that she phoned back and was looking for me, my husband answered, and she said that my brother had been shot.

“Claude Matthews. He was no gangster. He was serving the community for almost 30 years. He left the last child at school, and my brother was shot about 17 times.”

The woman battled to hold back the tears as police officials combed the scene.

The motive for the killing cannot be confirmed at this stage.
