A security officer has been shot and killed by suspected cable thieves at the Njala substation in Moreleta Park, east of Pretoria.

The 29-year-old guard was shot and killed on Wednesday morning.
The suspects opened fire at the security officers when they were caught stealing cables at the substation.
The incident led to a major outage leaving thousands of residents without electricity.
MMC for Utility Services Themba Fosi says the incident proves the need for the national government to intensify the fight against cable theft.
"This also shows the amount of sporadic cable theft and vandalism that is occurring across the city. It is high time the national government make the substations our national key points so that they can be safely guarded and can be able to supply stable electricity to the residents.”
The substations that get their electricity from Njala 132KV substation include Watloo 1, Mamelodi 1,2 and 3, Wapadrand, Mooikloof, Koedoespoort and Heatherly.
