Shelter Movement warns of possible GBV spike
The South African Shelter Movement, reminded authorities and law enforcements to be aware of the heightened risks of gender-based violence on public holidays.
The Director General for the movement, Fatima Mamod, said that although the holiday season brings joy and celebration for many, it is also a time of heightened domestic violence and abuse.
She added that public holidays can be dangerous for women and children trapped at home with their perpetrators.
“ We often see a spike in domestic violence around public holidays due to increased time spent in violent environments, combined with substance abuse and financial stress,” Mamod said.
She reminded victims that shelters are available throughout the holidays to offer safety and support.
Mamod pleaded with the public to be vigilant and to speak up should they see or hear of a gender-based violence case.
“To the survivors: You are not alone, help is available," she added.
Mamod urged the government to intensify visibility , response and coordination during the easter holidays.
