SIU to probe corruption & fraud in Free State departments, legislature
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has been given the green light to investigate corruption, fraud, malpractice and maladministration in the Free State departments of Public Works, Human Settlements and the provincial legislature.

President Cyril Ramaphosa authorised the proclamation, which covers allegations of unlawful and improper conduct that took place between 1 March 2010 and 23 February 2024.
Spokesperson Kaiser Kganyago says the agency will probe the procurement of services from the Ramkraal Project by the department and the provincial legislature.
"The SIU will also investigate payments made in a manner that was not fair, competitive, transparent, equitable or cost-effective; or contrary to applicable legislation, and any related unauthorised, irregular, or fruitless and wasteful expenditure incurred by the State."
Kganyago says the scope of the investigation will cover any allegations of serious maladministration.
"Improper conduct by employees of the state institutions, unlawful expenditure of public money or property. Unlawful, irregular, or unapproved acquisitive act, transaction, measure, or practice having a bearing upon State property.”
Kganyago says any evidence of criminal conduct will be sent to the NPA for further action.
