Slovo Park residents enraged over power outages, street lights

A service delivery protest erupted in the early hours of Thursday morning in Slovo Park, Springs, where angry residents barricaded Welgedacht Road with burning tyres, rubble, and stones, bringing traffic to a standstill.

The protest began at around 06:30, with community members expressing frustration over persistent power outages and non-functional street lights in the area.
The situation became volatile as some demonstrators began throwing stones at passing vehicles, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
"The residents are aggrieved by service delivery issues of power outages and street lights. The situation is volatile as they are throwing moving vehicles with stones,” said Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Thabiso Makgato.
Both the metro police and South African Police Service have been deployed to the area in an effort to calm tensions and restore order.
Makgato says no injuries have been reported, but several motorists were forced to make U-turns to avoid the unrest.
"Authorities have advised drivers to avoid Welgedacht Road and instead use Honeysuckle Road as an alternative route to access the N12 highway and nearby areas.
"Officials have not yet confirmed whether a formal memorandum of grievances has been submitted by residents. The situation remains tense as police continue to monitor developments."
