Stalled Musina-Makhado SEZ sparks calls for forensic probe

The DA has joined EFF and ActionSA in demanding forensic investigations into the stalled Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone in Limpopo.

The multibillion-rand project, which promised more than R40 billion in investments, has reportedly made no progress since its inception in 2018.
DA's Jacques Smalle highlighted what he described as questionable practices, such as SLM Consulting Engineers being awarded a contract worth R21.7 million.
The amount exceeded the company’s accepted offer of R19.7 million.
"According to the MMSEZ Board’s own submission, R579 million in contracts have been awarded, and R155 million spent — yet only one project (internal roads) reached partial implementation, and that too was halted due to litigation and non-compliance with SEZ standards," Smalle said.
"There is a pattern of repeated appointments with the same service providers."
The Special Economic Zone was intended to drive industrialisation, attract foreign investments, and create jobs as Limpopo's flagship development project.
The EFF in Limpopo's Lawrence Mapoulo has called for the project to be halted to avoid any further malfeasance.
"The EFF is equally concerned about the salaries of the personnel, stipends and benefits for board members which is a complete waste because there is no value for money in this transaction," he said.
Meanwhile, ActionSA's Victor Mothamela labelled the project as a clear example of misgovernance by the provincial government.
"We demand a comprehensive inquiry, including a forensic audit to identify instances of corruption. We will work with communities, businesses, and government departments to ensure transparency and accountability," he said.
The MMSEZ falls under the Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism Department.
