Stan Mathabatha will go head-to-head with Dickson Masemola for the province’s top political job as chairperson of the governing party.

Mathabatha’s shot at a re-election for a third term has left a bitter taste for some.

Despite the fierce contest, it’s understood both candidates are Cyril Ramaphosa allies - boding well for Ramaphosa’s presidential bid at the national conference later this year.

Pule Shayi and Florence Radzilani, once implicated in the VBS saga, will vie for the position of deputy chairperson, while Reuben Madadzhe and Soviet Lekganyane will compete for provincial secretary.

Donald Selamolela declined nomination for the position of provincial treasurer, leaving Faith Chauke and Nakedi Kekana in the running.

At the launch of the conference on Friday, the ANC’s national Treasurer, Paul Mashatile pleaded with delegates to use the opportunity to reaffirm the governing party’s renewal agenda.

“Comrades, the task of renewing and uniting the ANC can no longer be postponed. It is our generational mission. We dare not fail,” he told a packed hall in Polokwane.

“To us renewal includes ensuring that we do everything we do not for ourselves, but for the greater good of our movement and the people of South Africa. It includes taking deliberate action to close the social distance between our movement and the people. “

Limpopo is the third province, after Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape, to host its provincial conference ahead of the policy conference and the 55th National Conference in December.

The outcomes of the conference are likely to be known by Saturday evening.
