Steep hike for petrol, diesel in July
Motorists can expect to cough up more at the pumps from Wednesday after the Department of Energy announced an increase in fuel prices for July.
Both grades of petrol will increase by between 52 cents and 55 cents per litre, while diesel will increase by 84 cents and 82 cents per litre and illuminating paraffin by 89 cents per litre.
Meanwhile, LP gas will decrease by 57 cents per kilogram countrywide, except in the Western Cape, where an increase of R1.90 cents will be implemented.
The department’s spokesperson, Robert Maake, said the increase is due to the higher oil prices.
“The reasons for these higher oil prices are due to the conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Iran during the period under review.
"The rand strengthened against the dollar and cushioned the prices by over 15 and 16 cents a litre. The Maximum Refinery Price of LP gas is decreasing by 57 cents per kilogram due to lower prices of propane and butane.”
Maake added that Minister Gwede Mantashe approved a 14% supply cost recovery on the Maximum Refinery Gate Price of LP gas imported through the port of Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape.
"The MRGP of LP gas in the Western Cape increased by 190 cents per kilogram, resulting in the MRGP of R36.80 cents per kilogram. The slate levy remained unchanged at 0 cents per litre on the price structures of both petrol and diesel."
