Students at the Stellenbosch University are fuming after a campus residence head used the k-word during a meeting on Wednesday.

It is understood that Johan Groenewald used the word as an example of those which are unacceptable.
University spokesperson Martin Viljoen says an investigation is underway.
“Stellenbosch University has taken note of an incident in a residence in which a resident head used the k-word and the distress it caused among residents. SU places a very high premium on creating a culture of respect and human dignity among staff and students.
“As the University is deeply aware of the pain that the use of the word causes, the University views the matter in a very serious light. SU's Unit for Equality was informed about the incident and was requested to gather information about the incident and the context in which the word was used,” says Viljoen.
Viljoen says it believes the word was used by the resident head in a very specific context.
“Namely in a conversation specifically about what would be unacceptable references and behaviour in student communities.”
