Parliament's spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo announced Shabangu ‘s resignation in a statement on Thursday saying no reasons were given for the resignation.

Former Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba resigned as minister in a cloud of controversy in November last year after he was found to have lied under oath to the public protector and the courts. Questions have also been asked about his links to the controversial Gupta family.

This year he withdrew his name from the list of ANC officials set to go to Parliament. Former Speaker, Baleka Mbete, followed suit.

Shabangu was not mentioned by President Cyril Ramaphosa when he unveiled his new cabinet last week and was replaced by Lindiwe Zulu.

In Mothapo’s statement on Thursday, he notes: “There are currently 4 casual vacancies (vacancies arising from resignations after being sworn-in) in the NA [National Assembly]. This is due to the recent resignations of Ms Letsatsi-Duba, Ms Shabangu and Ms Mfeketo. President Rampahosa...ceased being an MP when the NA elected him as President."

It was reported earlier that Letsatsi-Duba, the former State Security Minister, and Mfeketo, the former Minister of Human Settlements, also stepped as MPs.

The three were part of a group of 14 former ministers who did not make it into Ramaphosa's new Cabinet.
