Suspect in Zanzou attack alleges police torture

The 41-year-old man arrested on charges related to the physical and sexual assault of patrons at the popular Pretoria nightclub made his first appearance in the city’s magistrate’s court on Monday.

Speaking through his attorney, the accused claimed police assaulted him during his arrest.
The suspect, whose identity may not be revealed at this stage, said the officers who assaulted him ensured that his injuries would not be visible.
He insisted that he needed medical attention. However, his lawyer conceded that he had received medical attention for the only apparent injury to his leg.
The lawyer also said his client claims he had R8,000 that was taken from him, allegedly by the police, without explanation.
Responding to the allegations, the National Prosecuting Authority's Lumka Mahanjana said: "He did indicate in court, through his attorney, that the police assaulted him during his arrest. But also, he mentioned that there are no visible marks that support his allegations. So, the state will investigate his allegations, however, it does not mean that the charges will be withdrawn against the accused."
The man, who was arrested in Yeoville last week Thursday, faces eight counts of compelled sexual assault and six counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).
The charges emanate from two case dockets filed with the police.

Following the social media distribution of videos depicting the assault of patrons, six victims came forward and filed criminal complaints with the police.
In the first case, two men alleged that they were assaulted at the establishment in April 2022. A second case was registered when four men alleged that the suspects compelled them to perform sexual acts on themselves in January 2023.

It also emerged in court that the suspect was previously convicted of shoplifting after paying a R300 admission of guilt fine.
The court granted the state's request for a seven-day postponement for bail investigation.
The suspect will remain behind bars until his next appearance on Monday.
