A suspected truck hijacker shot dead on the East Rand
Police have arrested eight suspects believed to have been a gang involved in truck hijackings.
Law enforcement officials suspect the gang was on the verge of hijacking an eight-ton truck in Boksburg on Friday when they were intercepted on the R554 in the Klippoortjie area.
Hawks spokesperson Philani Nkwalase says they tried to stop the suspects, but law enforcement officers were greeted with gunfire.
Officials shot back, fatally wounding one suspect.
Four other suspects were injured and four more were arrested.
"The suspects aged between 26 and 48 are expected to appear in court soon on charges of murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition as well as conspiracy to commit a crime," says Nkwalase.
