Thousands of commuters were left stranded on Friday. Taxi operations have since resumed.

Drivers embarked on a stay away as part of a protest against the impounding of their taxis by traffic officials.

Commuters in Kempton Park, Katlehong, Tembisa, Germiston, and surrounding areas were mainly affected by the industrial action.

SANTACO Ekurhuleni Secretary Zweli Mnisi said the act was to send a strong message to the authorities.

"We sincerely apologize to all commuters who were left stranded,"

"We recognize the immense inconvenience this caused and assure you that this was not an easy decision for us to take," Mnisi said.

Mnisi said the halt was necessary in light of the continued heightened impoundments of taxi vehicles by traffic officials over unresolved.

He also said their operators have been forced to deal with hefty financial losses, not only through the repeated impoundments but also through the excessive release fees demanded.

"The current practice does not allow these tickets to be challenged fairly in a court of law, leaving operators without proper recourse,"

"The same authorities that take unreasonably long to issue operating licenses and continue to face backlogs which remain unresolved,"

"The decision to suspend operations was made in the interest of highlighting these injustices," Mnisi added.
