Mpumalanga teacher suspended for ‘forcefully’ cutting pupil’s braids

The Mpumalanga Education Department has suspended a teacher from the LD Moetanalo High School in Mhluzi.

The teacher was suspended after a video went viral on social media showing the teacher forcefully cutting the braids of a pupil in class.

Mpumalanga Education spokesperson Gerald Sambo says investigations are underway.

“The department has decided to institute precautionary suspension against the teacher with immediate effect while the investigation into the circumstances that led to this incident unfolds.

“The department will also reflect on the school’s code of conduct for learners as part of the investigation. The department will provide more information on the matter once the investigations conclude.” 

Sambo says psycho-social counselling will be given to affected pupils.

“The learner and other learners affected by this unfortunate incident will urgently be assisted with psychological counselling by departmental officials to help them pull through this unfortunate ordeal.”
