Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Safety and Emergency Services, Karen Meyer, has confirmed the decision.

Meyer says the capital cannot avoid that technology is becoming more effective in fighting crime and therefore, the City of Tshwane is moving towards a smart and safer city concept.

"We are not saying we are never going to hire new Metro Police officers; we are saying we are shifting our focus a bit to extend our technology," says Meyer.

She adds the fact remains that police officers cannot be present at certain crime spots for 24 hours of everyday.

"We have to use at certain instances more cameras, and they are available 24 hours."
