Teen girls appear before Inquiry over alleged assault in JHB
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Seven teenagers appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday for a Preliminary Inquiry, following allegations that they assaulted a 14-year-old girl in Yeoville on 10 May 2025.

This after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
The inquiry, held under the provisions of the Child Justice Act, aims to assess the personal circumstances, backgrounds, and contributing factors surrounding the minors’ alleged involvement in the incident.
The Act mandates that such an inquiry must be held within 48 hours of a minor's arrest.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the altercation allegedly escalated into a group assault, prompting legal action and subsequent assessments by Probation Officers.
Thus far, two of the accused have undergone these assessments.
The case has been postponed to 21 May 2025 for the finalisation of the Preliminary Inquiry, during which further details surrounding the case are expected to emerge.
NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane condemned the alleged assault and urged young people to seek peaceful and constructive ways to resolve conflict.
"The NPA strongly discourages violence among youth and continues to promote conflict resolution through non-violent means."
The identities of the minors involved remain protected in accordance with child protection laws.
