The incident occurred on the N6 around 15 km south of Reddersburg, heading towards Smithfield and about 60 kilometres south of Bloemfontein.

The City to City bus was transporting 33 passengers and collided with a heavy duty vehicle.

According to Free State Emergency Management Services (EMS), five fatalities were initially confirmed, and an additional five deaths were reported after extrication efforts as some passengers were trapped in the wreckage.

Seven people sustained moderate injuries, while two others have serious injuries and are being treated at hospitals in Bloemfontein.

Motorists are advised to take alternative routes due to a complete road closure in the area.

"At this stage, we cannot confirm the exact cause of the fatal accident; hence the law enforcement is at the scene. They will then establish that at a later stage," said EMS Sipho Towa.
