Three people, including two municipal employees, have been arrested for cable theft in Isando, the Ekurhuleni metropolitan police department said on Sunday.
"[A police] officer found two council employees and an accomplice cutting a copper cable from a 300m roll," EMPD spokesman Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said in a statement.
He said an EMPD officer was inspecting municipal storage buildings in Isando on Sunday morning when he came across an open boom gate.
He came across the three men, who did not have an official work order, cutting the cable.
One of the men arrested was a storeman in Isando and the other was a foreman from Tembisa.
"The third suspect claimed he is a self-employed man and a friend to both men," said Mokheseng.
The three were arrested and would appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of cable theft.
