Toddler killed in Ekurhuleni shack fire

Two people, including a two-year-old child, were killed in a shack fire in Nigel, Ekurhuleni, early Sunday morning.

The victims, who were burned beyond recognition, were declared dead at the scene after their remains were found in the charred structure.
An 8-year-old child escaped with minor burns and was transported to Pholosong Hospital for treatment.
According to the City of Ekurhuleni’s emergency services, firefighters arrived to find a shack fully engulfed in flames, with community members already trying to douse the fire.
Once the fire was extinguished, a search and recovery operation led to the discovery of the bodies.
“Communities are reminded to use heating appliances with caution during this winter as many of these incidents can be avoided by making sure that all this heating and lighting devices are attended when in use,” said the city’s emergency management spokesperson, Maswati Ndluli.
