The Department of Transport says it is determined to reduce the number of fatalities on the country’s roads over the festive season by at least 10%.

This was revealed by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula, who joined Johannesburg metro police chief David Tembe at the launch of the city’s festive season road safety campaign on Monday.
“Crashes will always be there. What we are reducing are fatalities and the road carnages during this festive season. We have put in terms of our overall strategy to reduce carnages by 10%. For us to achieve that it means that our prevention should be strong,” Mbalula said.
Metro police officers were out in full swing at the Crown interchange on Monday, where they conducted a road block ahead of the festive season.
An unroadworthy taxi was also pulled off the road by metro police.
