Tshwane council collapses after EFF and ANC stage walk-out

The African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) collapsed the Tshwane special council meeting by staging a walk-out on Thursday.

The meeting, which was meant to vote on motions of no confidence against mayor Stevens Mokgalapa, the speaker and MMC’s, got off to a chaotic start on Thursday morning with a physical confrontation between an official and members of the ANC and EFF.

Councils also failed to agree on who has the right to determine the sequence of events at the meeting.

Speaker Katlego Mathebe wanted her motion to be the final item on the agenda, while he EFF and ANC demanded it be moved to the top.

The meeting subsequently failed to reached a quorum after the walk-out by the ANC and EFF, which meant the special sitting collapsed without the motions of no confidence being heard.

The parties say they will be writing to Gauteng MEC Cooperative Governance Lebogang Maile regarding the day's proceedings.

EFF Tshwane chairperson Moafrika Mabogaone says they did everything within the prescripts of the law.

"So we are saying that we think you have turned into a law unto yourself and therefore we don't think that it's going to be lawful for us to remain here and be in the council that is presided by you.

"We are going to leave you but let's warn you that leaving here we are going to write to the MEC of Cogta to complain about your bullying behaviour.”

ANC chief whip Aaron Maluleka described Mathebe's actions as an embarrassment.

"It is an embarrassment as a council that we have a speaker that has total disregard of the laws.

"We have appealed and tried to convince but you are not ready to listen to us, you want to protect your position and serve your party."
