Tshwane heads to court to prevent municipal workers downing tools

Tshwane Mayor Randall Williams says the city’s legal team has been
instructed to apply for a court interdict against striking members of the South
African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu).

Municipal workers in Tshwane have downed tools due to wage dispute with the city, bringing to a halt several of the city’s services.
“This morning (Friday) I have given instruction to the city’s legal team to obtain an urgent interdict against the South Africa Municipal Workers Union in Tshwane after members of the union disrupted services and interrupted service delivery,” says Williams.
Williams believes the strike is unlawful and a political act aimed at sabotaging the work done in the city.
“We have received reports of bus services being disrupted, waste contractors being intimidated, and Tshwane staff being denied entry into their offices or threatened as a result of this unlawful strike action.”
He adds that there will also be a civil litigation against SAMWU for any “wasteful costs” created as a result of the strike.
