Tshwane interdicted from impounding e-hailing cars

The High Court in Pretoria has on Friday interdicted the Tshwane metro police (TMPD) from impounding e-hailing cars that are operating without permits.

E-hailing operators such as Uber, Bolt, inDrive, and Afrikaans e-hailing service Wanatu had their cars impounded in recent months for operating without permits.
However, the various e-hailing services complained that this is caused by a backlog in the issuing of permits by the Gauteng Transport Department.
The Department has temporarily stopped accepting and processing all permit applications.
Wanatu, which has been operating in Pretoria and Centurion since October last year, had two of its vehicles impounded by the TMPD.
In court, Wanatu was represented by the lobby group Afriforum jointly with seven other applicants.
"This is not only a victory for drivers at e-transport services, but for all Pretorians who need safe and convenient transport," said Wanatu, chief executive officer Judith van der Walt.
“This is a victory for every e-commuter in the Tshwane Metro. The city cannot punish drivers for a delay they did not cause.”
