Tshwane nears final stage of Zwartkop Substation repairs
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The City of Tshwane has confirmed that repairs at the fire-damaged Zwartkop substation are in their final stages, following the fire a week ago.

An explosion damaged the substation and left various areas in Centurion and Pretoria East without electricity.
City spokesperson Lindela Mashigo says 95% of the required tests have been successfully completed, and only one crucial task remains.
"The communication link between Zwartkop and Kwagga Infeed Substation.
“This communication is essential to protect the Zwartkop transformer. The high-voltage circuit breaker, located at Kwagga, must be able to trigger in the event of a supply fault.
"Technicians have successfully installed the cable end box and connected it to the main transformer after what was described as a “gruelling” process. The final communication test is now underway, after which the switching team will gradually re-energise the substation to avoid overloading the system."
Mashigo adds, "Power will be restored in phases, with critical infrastructure and residential areas to follow in a staggered sequence".
"The city has issued another apology for the ongoing outage and appealed for patience as the technical team completes the last steps of the operation."
