Tshwane working to restore water supply in Soshanguve

The City of Tshwane on Sunday said its technicians were working around the clock to restore water supply to residents of Soshanguve.

This comes as residents of the area were growing increasingly frustrated and angry over the lack of water supply in their homes.

Tshwane said its technicians were unable to pump water to the Soshanguve Block L Tower due to the low levels of the local reservoir.

One of the reasons for the low water levels in some reservoirs is the recently completed infrastructure maintenance programme conducted by Rand Water.

The water utility embarked on a month-long maintenance work to improve its infrastructure in Gauteng, North West and Mpumalanga.

Tshwane's Palmiet and Mapleton reservoirs were hard hit by the maintenance work, leading to prolonged water outages in some areas within the city.

Tshwane's spokesperson, Selby Bokaba, said water tankers have since been dispatched to assist the affected residents.

“Although the maintenance was completed on Tuesday, 30 July, the system is still struggling to recover from it. The Soshanguve L Reservoir went from 18% at 15:00 on Friday) to 8.67% at 18:00.

"This shows that the incoming supply from Rand Water's Hartebeeshoek Reservoir was lost. City technicians are unable to pump to the Soshanguve Block L Tower due to the low level of the Soshanguve Block L Reservoir. The reservoir level has to be above 30% before pumping can commence.

"Rand Water has to first replenish its own reservoirs fed from the Mapleton and Palmiet systems before they can begin to distribute water to their municipal customers. This process can take up to two weeks for the network to fully recover. This, however, does not mean that water supply will be restored in two weeks' time.”

Bokaba says the water supply has been restored to the majority of the areas that experienced an outage.
