Tshwane says ‘clueless’ about effectiveness of Gauteng e-panic button
Updated | By Lebohang Ndashe
The City of Tshwane says the effectiveness of the Gauteng provincial government’s e-panic button remains unclear.

Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi rolled out an e-panic button initiative earlier this year, saying it would enhance emergency responses across the province.
Questions, however, remain around the initiative’s effectiveness and whether it will curb crime in the province.
In Tshwane, the Department of Community Safety targeted Mamelodi, Soshanguve, Ga Rankuwa and Mabopane as the biggest townships in the region.
The department responded to queries from Jacaranda FM News by saying that Tshwane councillors welcomed the introduction of the e-panic button and assisted with raising awareness and mobilising residents to download the e-panic button app and attend activations across the city.
However, Tshwane's Community Safety MMC Grandi Theunissen said he is unable to confirm the effectiveness of the e-panic button due to a lack of feedback from the provincial government.
“We have spoken to the province to communicate and provide any information about the initiative, but they are not getting back to us. At the moment, we don’t even know who has the e-panic button,” Theunissen added.
