Two ANC MPs resign amid rumours of imminent cabinet reshuffle
Two ANC MPs resigned from their positions in Parliament on Monday amid ongoing speculation around a possible cabinet reshuffle by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo confirmed that Tshilidzi Munyai and Mervyn Dirks resigned as members of the National Assembly.
The resignations come amid rumours of an imminent cabinet reshuffle following the ANC national conference in December, which elected Ramaphosa for a second term as ANC leader.
It also comes amid reports that David Mabuza has communicated his intention to resign to President Ramaphosa.
Mabuza was replaced as ANC deputy president by Paul Mashatile at the conference.
Several current cabinet ministers, including Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi, International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor, and Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa, were not elected into the party’s NEC at the December conference.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula will also have to be replaced, as he is needed at Luthuli House full-time to focus on his role as ANC secretary-general.
Meanwhile, Sihle Zikalala, who is now the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in KZN, has been re-deployed to the National Assembly.
In a statement released on Monday, ANC provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo said Zikalala will resign from his current position.
"Undoubtedly, this resignation has necessitated the reconfiguration of the provincial executive committee. The premier will introduce the new MEC, once the ANC has finalised its deployment process and completed consultations with the structures of the ANC.”
