Two cops killed during awaiting trial prisoner escape in Roodepoort
Gauteng police are searching for two suspects who gunned down two detectives who were transporting an awaiting trial prisoner in Roodepoort.
The two police officers were transporting Jabulani Moyo back to prison after he appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Friday.
Moyo is linked to a robbery at a business in February 2023.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said the two officers were shot and disarmed while driving through the Roodepoort CBD.
“The sergeant was certified dead on the crime scene while the warrant officer was taken to the hospital, where he was certified dead on arrival,” said Masondo.
Moyo fled in the police vehicle, which was subsequently found abandoned a few kilometres from the crime scene.
“Police are appealing to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation or assist in the apprehension of the suspect/s to please call the nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” said Masondo.
