Two killed in Limpopo Police shootout

Two notorious wanted criminals in Limpopo have been fatally shot during a shootout with police.

The pair is suspected of terrorizing several communities. 


They were involved in multiple criminal activities, including the murder of a Limpopo Highway Patrol Sergeant, from whom three rifles were stolen. 


Other charges against them include rape, murder, house robbery, and kidnapping.


Incidents were reported in areas such as Lebowakgomo, Magatle, Sekhukhune, and Mankweng.


Following the shootout in Burgersfort on Tuesday, paramedics were called to the scene and declared both men dead on the scene.


According to Limpopo Police Commissioner General Thembi Hadebe , the suspectswere cornered on Tuesday and retaliated by opening fire on the police. 


A multi-agency team, acting on intelligence leads, tracked the suspects to a location near Ga-Mampuru on R555.


Upon confrontation, the suspects opened fire, and one was fatally shot. 


The suspect, who remains unidentified but is believed to be between 30 and 35 years old, was found with a pistol and six rounds of ammunition.


Meanwhile, his accomplice managed to flee with a rifle. 


Police pursued him, and when confronted, he also fired at the officers. 


After a retaliatory exchange, he was fatally wounded.


The suspect, who is estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old, was found with an R5 rifle, three live rounds of ammunition, a 9mm pistol with three live rounds, and 12 stolen cell phones. 


He was identified as a fugitive who had escaped from the Lebowakgomo Magistrate Court on 17 March 2023, where he was facing multiple charges, including rape and house robbery.


A stolen rifle linked to various violent crimes in the Capricorn and Sekhukhune districts was also recovered.


“We appreciate everyone, including the community members, for providing the police with valuable information that led to the successful tracking and apprehension of the most wanted suspects,” said Hadebe.


Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
