UJ confirms student killed in Braamfontein shooting

The University of Johannesburg has confirmed that one of the three people who were shot in Braamfontein on Thursday was a second-year student at the institution.

Johannesburg metro police confirmed that three people were shot and killed in broad daylight in Braamfontein.
Two men were shot dead while sitting in a stationary car, while a stray bullet killed a student.
Another student was wounded.
In a statement, UJ confirmed the deceased was an 18-year-old male student.
“It is with profound sadness that the University of Johannesburg has learnt of the death of its student, who was caught in the crossfire during a shooting incident in Braamfontein this afternoon (Thursday). Another student is recovering in hospital.
"The two were among the students who were travelling in a bus from the university to their places of residence in Johannesburg City Centre."
UJ is providing counselling to students who were on the bus at the time of the shooting.
"UJ is in contact with law enforcement agencies who are investigating the incident. Our thoughts are with the families of the affected students. The university is providing counselling to students who were on the bus at the time of the shooting.”
Wits University says it will also provide counselling for its staff and students.
