The Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi) says due to lack of any systematic irregularities it has approved the release of the 2017 grade 12 examination results.

A total of 10179 916 learners across the country sat down to write their grade 12 exams administered by the Department of Basic Education, The Independent examinations board (IEB), The South African Comprehensive assessment institute (SACAI) and others.
The results will be released on January 4.

Umalusi chairperson, Professor Jimmy Volmink, told the media at a briefing on Friday that there has been an improvement in learner performance.
“Learner performance of the 2017 cohort has moved closer to the average historical performance profile. It is pleased to see that there is a steady upward trend in the marks of subjects such as mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Physical Science and Life Science.”
Volmink says 104 001 learners have been progressed in 2017. This is a slight decrease from 2016.
“I am pleased to report that this year, based on the evidence presented to Umalusi by the DBE that the 2017 national senior certificate exams where largely incident free. We know that there were a few disruptions and on the scale they were minor. I want to just point out that this year, there were no leakage of examination papers, nothing.”
The Department of Basic Education has welcomed the decision by Umalusi to approve the release of the results.
