'Unfair' rostering, not wages main issue for FlySafair pilots
Updated | By Selaki Ledwaba
Trade union Solidarity says the ongoing strike by FlySafair pilots is not primarily about wages, but rather about perceived unfair rostering.

It says the current rosters are controlled by an algorithmic scheduling system that leaves little room for rest or family life.
Around 200 pilots represented by Solidarity have been on strike since Monday, following a breakdown in wage negotiations.
Solidarity spokesperson Helgard Cronje said although FlySafair submitted a final offer via email on Saturday, the airline failed to address the core issues pilots have been raising.
He said the leading issue was the request of at least one guaranteed weekend off per month and a more predictable shift roster.
“The offer contained too much vague language, and given the current breakdown in trust between pilots and the employer, clear and binding provisions are essential,” said Cronje.
“Additionally, a call was made to establish a flight roster or scheduling committee with real authority, where pilots and FlySafair management could meet at least twice a year to substantively address roster concerns.”
Cronje also clarified that the pilots were satisfied with the salary offer.
He said if the pilots do not accept the latest offer, the trade union will request the CCMA to assist again by Monday to reach a deal that provides for more flexibility and predictability in the scheduling system.
