Unions reject Transnet’s revised wage offer

The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) and the United National Transport Union (Untu) have rejected Transnet's revised wage offer.

The offer of 4.25% to 5% across the board has been described as an insult to the workers.

The unions are demanding a much higher wage increase of between 12% and 13.5%.

Thousands of workers at the state-owned ports and rail entity downed tools last week amid wage negotiations deadlock.

Satawu spokesperson Amanda Tshemes says the revised offer is way below the inflation rate.

"The employer is insulting us and our members because they know very well that the inflation rate in this country is 7.6%, and what the employer is offering us is way below the inflation rate.

“Satawu wrote to the president of the country, minister of finance and the minister of public enterprises seeking intervention as noticed that the management does not have a plan to rescue the entity.

“However, we are not going to compromise the workers in the process," says Tshemes.

The negotiations are set to continue at the bargaining council on Wednesday.
