Vandalism blamed for Motherwell library fire

An investigation has been launched into the cause of a fire which destroyed the Motherwell Library in Gqeberha.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has blamed the fire on vandals and has urged members of the public with information to come forward.
The metro’s portfolio head for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Bassie Kamana says the fire is a major setback in the city's fight to combat criminal acts.
"We want to condemn in the strongest way possible the constant vandalism of our facilities that are actually in place to service the same people that destroy them. Today when our staff members arrived at the scene they found our wooden and ceiling material packed just outside the doorstep.
“It was ready to go, this means our residents continue to vandalise and steal from our facilities and we are calling on them to root out this self-destructing culture from their system as it is a recipe for disaster," Kamana said.
Acting fire chief Wayne Hendricks said when the firefighters were called around 6am they rushed to the scene and managed to put the fire out before further damage was caused to the other areas of the building.
