Venda student’s murder shows ‘need for campus safety reform’

Educational Activist Hendric Makaneta says universities must ensure there are clear reporting mechanisms for students to seek help in situations where they feel threatened or unsafe.

His remarks follow a murder investigation at the University of Venda in Limpopo, where a 20-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her boyfriend following a confrontation at their on-campus residence on Friday.
Makaneta said universities must prioritise wellness programs that focus on emotional intelligence, healthy relationships, and stress management.
“A 20-year-old female student, with a promising future, has lost her life under violent circumstances, allegedly at the hands of her peer,” said Makaneta.
“This senseless act of violence is not only a blow to her family, friends, and the university community, but it also speaks to a broader issue that requires immediate attention.”
Makaneta said institutions of higher learning should take immediate steps to address the mental, emotional, and psychological well-being of their students.
“This incident is not an isolated case. It should serve as a wake-up call to all universities, especially those with large student populations, that student well-being must be placed at the forefront of institutional priorities.”
Meanwhile, the accused boyfriend is scheduled to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday after he tried to evade arrest by jumping through the window from the third floor.
According to police reports, he is at a medical facility receiving treatment under police guard.
